GARBAGE DISPOSAL INSTALLATION
Garbage disposal units are great for the home. They are designed to get rid of food waste in a way that is quick and does not create any foul odors in your kitchen. However, there are some safety tips you will want to consider before using one. First of all, always remember that water and electricity do not mix well together. It is also important to know what type of garbage disposal unit you have at home so you can follow the proper steps when installing it. Visit our home page about your friendly plumber in Cedar Park, TX to help you with your garbage disposal problems.
The first thing you will need to do is shut off the garbage disposal unit’s power switch if it has one. When water flows into the garbage disposal unit, it usually spins very fast but shuts down once you turn on the switch or flip its drain lever up (if it has one). The next thing you will want to do is turn the water on and make sure that there is no garbage disposal unit installed in your sink by checking if it spins. Once this is done and you are sure that nothing is obstructing the drain, you can pull apart the two halves of your new garbage disposal unit and place them side by side on a stack of towels near your sink. You can find us on Google maps here: Garbage Disposal Emergency Plumber
Now comes the most important step: installing the rubber stopper (or an S or U-shaped metal wire) into the hole at the bottom of your sink where all plumbing drains come together. This stops any airflow from getting into your pipes which gives suction to help move food waste down through your pipes. If this does not happen, the air pressure will force the food waste to stay at the top of your drain, leading to a very messy clean-up. You can now attach one side of the garbage disposal unit’s metal collar to your sink using screws and lock-tight. If you are doing this on top of some tiles, make sure that you use some padding under it first so that you do not damage anything underneath.
Now that both halves are attached, simply position the second collar over the drain hole in your sink and slide it down into the place where it meets up with its counterpart. To make sure it fits properly, give it a few good tugs downwards before inserting any kind of screw or attachment point for your dishwasher hose if necessary. Turn the power back on and test the drain to make sure it does not clog. Also, pour some water into your garbage disposal unit and let it see if everything is working as expected.
If you want to save yourself a lot of future headaches (and possible injury or damage to your home), then take the time now to be sure that all parts fit together properly and there are no stray wires or screws lying around before turning on the switch. Also, please keep in mind that any disassembly of a garbage disposal unit will void its warranty so do not try to take apart a unit unless you know what you are doing.
